WHAT’S HAPPENING TO YOUR WATER?
Before we dive into the test, it’s important to understand that your pool naturally loses water every single day. This is usually due to evaporation, which can be surprisingly aggressive depending on the weather.
In April 2026, we’ve seen some fluctuating temperatures that can really kick evaporation into high gear. If it’s windy, dry, or if you’ve been running your heater frequently, you’re going to lose water. Sometimes, a "leak" is just nature taking its course. However, if you’re adding several inches of water every week, it’s time to be sure.
Constant water loss isn't just about the water bill. It also messes with your chemistry. Every time you add fresh hose water, you’re diluting your chemicals, making it harder for your chlorine to do its job. THE BUCKET TEST: YOUR SECRET WEAPON
The Bucket Test is the industry standard for DIY leak detection. It’s reliable, it’s free, and it gives you a clear "Yes" or "No" answer.
Here is what you’ll need:
- A standard 5-gallon plastic bucket.
- A waterproof marker or a piece of duct tape.
- A little bit of patience.

STEP-BY-STEP TO PEACE OF MIND
To get an accurate reading, follow these steps exactly. We want to make sure we’re comparing apples to apples when it comes to evaporation.
1. Bring the pool to the normal level
Make sure your pool is filled to its normal operating height (usually the middle of the skimmer opening).
2. Fill the bucket
Place the empty bucket on the second step of your pool. Fill the bucket with pool water until the water level inside the bucket matches the water level of the pool outside the bucket. This ensures the water in the bucket is the same temperature as the pool water, which is crucial for an accurate evaporation test.
3. Mark the levels
Use your marker or tape to mark the water level inside the bucket. Then, mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.
4. Turn off the equipment
Turn off your pump and make sure any auto-fill devices are shut off. We want the water to be as still as possible during the test.
5. Wait 24 hours
Leave everything exactly as it is for a full day. Try to avoid splashing in the pool or having a pool party during this window, we need controlled conditions! Also, if it rains, you’ll have to start over once the weather clears.

DECODING THE RESULTS
After 24 hours, go back out and look at your marks. This is the moment of truth.
- Scenario A: Both levels dropped equally. If the water inside the bucket and the water in the pool both dropped by the same amount (say, a quarter of an inch), congratulations! You don’t have a leak. What you’re seeing is normal evaporation. You can go back to enjoying your pool stress-free.
- Scenario B: The pool level dropped more than the bucket. If the pool water level is significantly lower than the level inside the bucket, you likely have a leak. Because the bucket was sitting in the pool, it experienced the same sun and wind as the pool surface. If the pool lost more, that extra water is escaping through a hole or a bad seal.

Run the bucket test again, but this time, keep the pump running for 24 hours.
- If you lose MORE water with the pump ON: The leak is likely in your "pressure side" plumbing: the pipes that return water to the pool.
- If you lose LESS water with the pump ON: The leak might be on the "suction side," or it’s a structural leak that is being slightly masked by the pressure of the water flow.
- If the loss is the same regardless of the pump: It’s likely a structural leak in the pool shell, a leaking light fixture, or a problem with the skimmer mouth.
DYE TESTING FOR THE BRAVE DIYER
If you’re feeling handy and want to pinpoint the exact spot, you can try a dye test. You can buy a specialized leak detection dye kit, or even use a little bit of red food coloring in a syringe.
With the pump turned off and the water completely still, swim down (or reach down) to suspected areas like:
- The edges of the pool lights.
- The seams of the skimmer.
- Any visible cracks in the plaster or tile.
Squirt a small amount of dye near the area. If there’s a leak, you’ll see the dye get sucked right into the crack or gap like a vacuum. It’s a very satisfying way to find a problem!
