Ever look at your pool and think, “Wait, wasn’t the water higher yesterday?”
It’s a sinking feeling, literally. You notice the tile line is showing a bit more than usual, or maybe your auto-fill valve is running constantly like a leaky faucet that won’t quit. Your mind immediately goes to the worst-case scenario: a massive crack in the shell, a broken underground pipe, and a water bill that’s going to make your eyes water.
In California, where the sun beats down and the air gets dry, it’s easy to blame evaporation. "It’s just the heat," we tell ourselves. But ignoring a potential leak is like throwing money down a drain, well, actually, it’s exactly like that.
At Limping Elk Pools, we see this all the time. Homeowners are stressed out because they don't know if they have a real problem or if the sun is just doing its thing. You want a clear answer without having to pay a leak specialist hundreds of dollars just to show up.
Good news: there is a simple, low-tech, and incredibly accurate way to find out if you need professional pool leak detection. It’s called the Bucket Test.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT A HIDDEN LEAK
Before we dive into the "how-to," let's talk about the "why." A leak isn't just about a higher water bill: though that’s a big part of it. When your pool loses water, it’s also losing the expensive chemicals you just put in. That means your pH gets out of whack, your chlorine levels tank, and suddenly you’re fighting an algae bloom on top of everything else.
Even worse, water escaping from your pool has to go somewhere. If it’s leaking into the ground around your pool deck, it can erode the soil, leading to cracked concrete or even structural damage to your home’s foundation.
Catching it early is the difference between a simple repair and a multi-thousand-dollar renovation. You deserve a pool that’s a source of relaxation, not a source of constant "what-if" anxiety!
THE SIMPLE TRICK: THE BUCKET TEST
You don't need fancy sonar equipment or a scuba suit to start your pool leak detection journey. You just need a 5-gallon bucket and 24 hours of patience. This test is the gold standard for DIY detection because it accounts for the exact weather conditions your pool is facing.
The logic is simple: a bucket of water sitting in your pool will experience the exact same evaporation as the pool itself. If the pool level drops faster than the bucket level, the water isn't just disappearing into the air: it’s escaping through a hole.
STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO RUN THE TEST
We’ve broken this down to be as easy as possible. No stress, no hassle: just a clear answer.
1. GET YOUR SUPPLIES
Grab a standard 5-gallon plastic bucket and a waterproof marker (or some duct tape). That’s it.
2. FILL AND PLACE
Bring the pool water level up to its normal height (usually mid-tile). Fill the bucket about 3/4 of the way with pool water. Now, set the bucket on the first or second step of your pool. You want the bucket to be submerged a few inches into the pool water: this ensures the water inside the bucket stays at the same temperature as the pool water, which makes the evaporation rates identical.
3. MARK THE LEVELS
This is the most important part!
- Use your marker or tape to mark the water level inside the bucket.
- Use your marker or tape to mark the pool’s water level on the outside of the bucket.
- Try to get them as close to each other as possible for easy comparison later.
4. HANDS OFF FOR 24 HOURS
Turn off your auto-fill valve if you have one. Don’t let anyone swim in the pool (no splashing allowed!). Don't add water. Just let it sit.

READING THE RESULTS
After 24 hours, go back out to the pool and take a look at your marks.
-
SCENARIO A: BOTH LEVELS DROPPED EQUALLY
If both the water in the bucket and the pool water level dropped by the same amount (usually about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch), congratulations! You don’t have a leak. What you’re seeing is normal evaporation. You can go back to enjoying your pool without the stress. -
SCENARIO B: THE POOL DROPPED MORE THAN THE BUCKET
If the pool water level is significantly lower than the level inside the bucket, you have a leak. The bucket acted as your "control" group: since it couldn't leak, its drop was purely from the sun and wind. The extra drop in the pool means the water is finding another exit.
THE PUMP TEST: NARROWING IT DOWN
If scenario B happened, don't panic! We can actually take this one step further to help your pool leak detection expert.
Run the bucket test twice.
- Test 1: Run it for 24 hours with the pump OFF.
- Test 2: Run it for 24 hours with the pump ON.
If the pool loses more water when the pump is running, the leak is likely in your pressure-side plumbing (the pipes returning water to the pool). If it loses more water when the pump is off, it’s likely a suction-side leak or a structural issue in the shell or light fixtures.
This little bit of info is a huge help for us: it means we can find the problem faster and get your pool back to perfect in no time!

COMMON PLACES LEAKS HIDE
While you’re waiting for those 24 hours to pass, you can do a quick visual inspection. Here are the "usual suspects" we look for:
- THE SKIMMER THROAT: This is the most common spot. The bond between the plastic skimmer and the concrete pool often pulls apart over time.
- POOL LIGHTS: The conduit that carries the wire from the light niche to the junction box is a notorious water thief.
- EQUIPMENT PAD: Check around your pump and filter. Do you see puddles? Even a small drip at the pump seal can lead to a massive loss over a month.
- THE HYDROSTATIC VALVE: If you have an older pool, this valve at the bottom can sometimes get stuck open, allowing pool water to drain into the ground.
WHY PROFESSIONAL DETECTION IS THE NEXT STEP
So, you’ve done the bucket test and confirmed there’s a leak. What now?
While the bucket test is great for confirming a problem exists, finding the exact spot of a leak underground or behind a wall requires specialized tools. We use things like electronic listening devices, pressure testing rigs, and specialized dyes to pinpoint the hole without tearing up your entire backyard.
Think of the bucket test as the thermometer that tells you that you have a fever: the professional pool leak detection is the doctor who finds out why and fixes it.
