Limping elk pools

Memorial Day has always felt different to me. For many, it’s the official kickoff to summer, the first weekend the grill stays hot and the pool water finally feels just right. But for those of us who spent a lifetime in uniform, the day carries a weight that’s hard to put into words.

Before I started Limping Elk Pools, I spent 20 years in the U.S. Army. Two decades of early mornings, heavy packs, and, most importantly, some of the finest men and women I’ve ever known. When you serve that long, you don’t just have coworkers; you have brothers and sisters. You share meals, you share missions, and sometimes, you share the heavy burden of saying goodbye to the ones who didn’t make it home.

That’s why I wanted to write this today. I’m not just your pool guy: I’m a veteran who believes that the best way we can honor our fallen is by living lives that are truly worthy of the sacrifice they made.

REMEMBERING THE DIFFERENCE

It’s easy to get our military holidays mixed up. We have Veterans Day in November to celebrate everyone who served, and Armed Forces Day to recognize those currently in uniform. But Memorial Day? This one is purely for the ones we lost.

It’s for the friends whose names are etched into granite walls. It’s for the soldiers who never got to see their kids grow up or start a business of their own. As a veteran-owned business, we carry that history with us every single day. We don’t just show up to clean a pool; we show up with a sense of duty and discipline that was forged in the service.

WHAT DOES "WORTHY" LOOK LIKE?

I often find myself thinking about my friends who stayed behind. If they were standing here today, what would they want to see? They wouldn’t want us to spend the day in mourning or sadness. They would want to see us enjoying the very freedoms they died to protect.

Living a life "worthy of their sacrifice" means a few things to me, and I think they apply to all of us:

  • VALUE YOUR TIME: Life is short: shorter for some than others. Spending your weekends scrubbing tiles or fighting with a green pool isn't the best use of the life you've been given. Let us handle the weekly pool service so you can spend that time with your family.
  • DO THE RIGHT THING: In the Army, integrity isn't a choice; it's a requirement. We bring that same "honest recommendations, no unnecessary upsells" policy to our customers. If you don’t need a new pump, we won’t tell you that you do.
  • BUILD SOMETHING GOOD: Whether it’s a family, a business, or a community, we owe it to the fallen to build something that lasts. For us, that’s a reliable service you can count on, week after week.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

You might wonder how 20 years in the Army translates to cleaning pools. To be honest, the core values are exactly the same.

When we’re out at your home, we aren’t just "winging it." We follow a strict schedule. We pay attention to the tiny details that others miss: like the chemical balance that keeps your family safe or the equipment repairs that prevent a small drip from becoming a massive flood.

We know you want clear water and a stress-free week! That’s why we’ve built our entire business around reliability. You get a notification when we’re on our way and a detailed service report (including a photo of your clean pool) when we’re done. It’s about communication and respect: values we learned while serving our country.

TAKING A MOMENT BY THE WATER

If you’re lucky enough to be by the pool this weekend, I have one small request. Before the first person jumps in, or before you flip the first burger on the grill, take just sixty seconds of silence.

Think about the men and women who never got to come home to their own backyards. Think about the Gold Star families who are missing someone today. When we enjoy our freedom: the freedom to relax, to laugh, and to gather safely: we are honoring their legacy.

Freedom isn't just a word; it’s a gift that was paid for by people who loved this country enough to give everything. We owe it to them to enjoy it fully.

HONORING THE LEGACY EVERY DAY

Being a veteran-owned company means we don’t just care about your pool: we care about our reputation and our community. We want to be the guys you can trust, the ones who do what they say they’re going to do, every single time.

This Memorial Day, we salute those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. We are humbled to be able to serve our neighbors here at home, and we are committed to living lives (and running a business) that reflect the values of the friends we’ve lost.
