THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT OUR LOCAL WATER
Why does this happen? It’s not your fault, and it’s not because you’re a "bad" pool owner. It’s simply the nature of our local geography. Our water is naturally packed with minerals like calcium and magnesium. When you fill your pool, you’re essentially pouring liquid rock into your backyard.
As the sun beats down and the water evaporates, the water leaves, but the minerals stay behind. Over time, the concentration of these minerals grows higher and higher. When the water can no longer "hold" the calcium, it looks for a place to land. Your beautiful pool tile is the perfect landing pad.

IDENTIFYING YOUR CALCIUM TYPE: THE GOOD VS. THE STUBBORN
Before you grab a scrub brush and start working up a sweat, you need to know what you’re dealing with. Not all calcium buildup is created equal. In the pool world, we generally deal with two different types of scale:
1. Calcium Carbonate
This is the "good" kind, if there is such a thing. It’s usually a white, flaky, or powdery crust. If you drop a little bit of vinegar on it and it starts to fizz, you’ve got calcium carbonate. Because it’s more porous, it’s much easier to remove with a little bit of elbow grease or a mild acid wash.
2. Calcium Silicate
This is the "nightmare" kind. It’s usually greyish-white and incredibly hard. If you try the vinegar test and nothing happens, you’re likely looking at silicate. This forms when the calcium reacts with the sand or silica in your water or pool finish. It takes a long time to form, and it takes even longer to remove. Often, this requires professional-grade equipment or heavy-duty chemical treatments.
DIY METHODS TO RESTORE YOUR TILE
If the buildup is still in the early stages, you might be able to handle it yourself over a weekend. We’re all about saving you a hassle, so here are the most effective ways to tackle light scaling on your own.
The Pumice Stone Method
For plaster pools with ceramic tile, a pumice stone is your best friend. You can find these at any pool supply store. The trick is to keep both the stone and the tile wet at all times. If the stone stays wet, it will wear down slowly and shouldn't scratch your tile. Gently rub the stone in a circular motion over the white spots. It’s tedious, but it’s incredibly satisfying to watch that white crust disappear.
Note: Never use a pumice stone on glass tile, vinyl liners, or fiberglass pools! You will cause permanent damage.
The Vinegar and Scrub Brush Approach
If you catch the scaling early, a simple 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water can work wonders. Spray it on the tile, let it sit for about ten minutes to eat away at the calcium carbonate, and then scrub it with a nylon pool brush. It’s safe, cheap, and smells like a salad: which is better than smelling like harsh chemicals.

WHEN TO PULL OUT THE BIG GUNS: MURIATIC ACID
Sometimes, the vinegar just isn't enough. If the scale has been sitting there for a full season, you might need something stronger. Muriatic acid is the industry standard for dissolving calcium, but it comes with a major "handle with care" warning.
We always recommend wearing gloves, eye protection, and a mask when working with acid. You’ll want to create a diluted solution (usually 1 part acid to 10 parts water) and apply it directly to the scale using a plastic applicator. You’ll see it foam and hiss: that’s the acid winning the battle against the minerals. Rinse it off thoroughly after a minute or two.
If this sounds a bit intimidating, don’t sweat it. Most of our customers prefer to have us handle the chemical side of things during our regular maintenance visits. There’s no reason for you to risk a chemical burn on your Saturday afternoon.
PREVENTION IS THE BEST MEDICINE
Removing scale is a chore. Preventing it is a strategy. As a veteran-owned company, we believe in the "ounce of prevention" philosophy. If we can keep your water chemistry in the "sweet spot," that calcium will stay dissolved in the water where it belongs, rather than turning into a crust on your tile.

- Maintain Perfect pH and Alkalinity: Scale loves high pH. If your pH levels drift above 7.8, the water becomes "scale-forming." We keep your pH between 7.2 and 7.6 to ensure the water stays slightly acidic enough to keep minerals in check.
- Manage Calcium Hardness: We monitor your calcium levels constantly. In our climate, we eventually have to drain and refill pools (usually every 3-5 years) because the mineral content simply gets too high for chemicals to manage.
- Use Scale Inhibitors: For pools that struggle with constant buildup, we can add specialized "sequestering agents." These chemicals act like a magnet, holding onto the calcium molecules so they can’t stick to your tile or equipment.
