Limping elk pools

You bought a saltwater pool because you wanted the "easy life." You wanted water that felt like silk on your skin, eyes that didn't sting after a long soak, and a maintenance schedule that didn't involve hauling giant jugs of liquid chlorine from the store every Saturday morning.

But then, you noticed it: that white, crusty, chalky buildup on your tiles. Or maybe your salt system started flashing a cryptic "Low Salt" or "Check Cell" light, even though you just added salt last month.

Welcome to the world of calcium scaling.

Don't worry: you aren't doing anything "wrong." Saltwater pools are fantastic, but they have their own set of rules. At Limping Elk Pools, we help homeowners across the area keep their water clear and their weeks stress-free! We’ve seen every type of scale buildup imaginable, and we know exactly how to handle it so you don't have to.

In this guide, we’re breaking down saltwater maintenance into bite-sized pieces. If you’ve got three minutes, you’ve got enough time to understand how to protect your investment.

THE SALT CELL: THE HEART OF YOUR POOL

Think of your salt cell (also called a salt water chlorine generator or SWG) as the "engine" of your pool. It takes ordinary salt and, through a little bit of electrical magic called electrolysis, turns it into pure chlorine.

When it’s working, it’s a beautiful thing. When it’s clogged with calcium, it’s a headache.

Why Calcium Scaling Happens

Calcium scaling is essentially "pool plaque." Because the salt cell creates a very high-heat, high-pH environment inside its little plastic housing, calcium in your water loves to crystallize and stick to the metal plates.

Once that scale builds up, two things happen:

  1. Chlorine production drops: The scale acts like an insulator, preventing the plates from doing their job.
  2. The cell wears out: If left too long, the scale can permanently damage the precious metal coating on the plates, leading to a very expensive replacement.

At Limping Elk Pools, our weekly pool service includes regular equipment checks to catch this before it becomes a $1,000 problem!

THE MAGIC NUMBERS: YOUR SALT POOL CHEATSHEET

To keep the "beast" of calcium scale at bay, you need to keep your water chemistry within a very specific window. It’s not about being a scientist; it’s about being consistent.

Here are the targets we aim for every time we service a pool:

  • Salt Levels: 2,700 – 3,400 ppm (parts per million). Check your manual, as some brands like different levels!
  • pH: 7.4 – 7.6. This is the most important number for stopping scale.
  • Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm. Too high, and you’re asking for scale. Too low, and the water eats your plaster.
  • Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm. This keeps your pH from bouncing around.

The Secret "Scale Trigger"

Most people think high calcium is the only reason they get scale. That’s a myth.

The real trigger is almost always high pH. Salt cells naturally cause your pH to rise every single day. If you aren't testing your pH weekly and bringing it back down with a little bit of acid, that scale is going to form: no matter how low your calcium levels are.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR SALT CELL (WITHOUT RUINING IT)

We recommend inspecting your salt cell every 2–3 months. If you see white flakes or crusty buildup inside the plates, it’s time for a bath.

Step 1: The Power Down
Never work on your cell while the pump is running. Turn off the power at the breaker. Safety first: always!

Step 2: The Visual Inspection
Unscrew the unions and take the cell out. Look down the "throat" of the cell. If it looks clear, put it back! You don't want to clean it with acid if you don't have to, as every acid wash slightly shortens the cell's life.

Step 3: The Garden Hose Trick
Try spraying it out with a high-pressure nozzle first. Often, the scale is soft enough to just wash away.

Step 4: The Acid Soak (The Heavy Hitter)
If the hose doesn't work, you'll need a mixture of 4 parts water to 1 part muriatic acid.

  • Warning: Always add acid to water, never water to acid!
  • Plug one end of the cell, pour the mix in, and let it "fizz" for about 10–15 minutes.
  • Once the fizzing stops, rinse it thoroughly and reinstall.

Don't want to mess with acid? We don't blame you. Handling chemicals can be a hassle and a safety risk. Our pool equipment repairs team handles cell cleanings and system diagnostics all the time. We’ve got you covered!

3 PRO TIPS TO STOP SCALE BEFORE IT STARTS

If you’re tired of scrubbing tiles and soaking cells in acid, follow these three rules:

1. Test Your Salt Monthly

Don't rely on the "Low Salt" light on your control panel. Those sensors can get dirty and lie to you. Use a dedicated salt test strip or a digital tester once a month to ensure you actually have enough salt. If the salt is too low, the cell works harder, gets hotter, and creates: you guessed it: more scale.

2. Watch Your "Input"

When you need to shock your pool, avoid using "Cal-Hypo" (Calcium Hypochlorite) shocks if your calcium levels are already high. Every bag of Cal-Hypo adds a little more calcium to your water. Instead, use liquid chlorine or a non-chlorine oxidizer to keep your water clear without the "chalky" side effects.

3. Brush, Brush, Brush!

It sounds simple, but brushing your pool walls and tiles once a week prevents calcium from finding a "home" to grow on. Think of it like brushing your teeth: it’s much easier to prevent plaque than it is to drill it out later.
