You know that scent. It’s that sharp, stinging, chemical odor that hits you the moment you step out onto a hotel pool deck or open the gate to a backyard swim. For years, most of us have been conditioned to smell that and think one thing: "Wow, this pool is super clean. They must have just put a lot of chlorine in there!"
It sounds logical, right? More smell equals more cleaning power.
But here is the truth that might surprise you: and maybe even gross you out a little bit. A healthy, perfectly balanced, and truly clean pool should have almost no smell at all. If your pool smells like a chemical factory, it isn't because it’s "clean." It’s actually because the chlorine is losing the battle against contaminants.
At Limping Elk Pools, we believe that a backyard oasis should be a place of relaxation, not a place that makes your eyes water and your skin itch. We’re here to debunk the "chlorine smell" myth and show you how a professional weekly pool service can keep your water crystal clear and odor-free.
WHAT YOU’RE ACTUALLY SMELLING: MEET THE CHLORAMINES
If it’s not "clean chlorine" making that smell, what is it? The answer is chloramines.
To understand chloramines, you have to understand how chlorine works. When we add chlorine to your pool, it’s in a form called "Free Chlorine." This is the good stuff. It’s active, it’s hungry, and its job is to seek out and destroy bacteria, algae, and organic matter.
However, when Free Chlorine finds "swimmer waste": things like sweat, body oils, nitrogen, and (let's be honest) urine: it attaches itself to those contaminants to neutralize them. Once the chlorine bonds with these organic compounds, it becomes "Combined Chlorine," also known as chloramines.
The "pool smell" is the scent of chloramines, not fresh chlorine.
In simpler terms: that smell is the scent of chlorine that is already "used up" and is currently struggling to process the waste in the water. If the smell is strong, it means your pool has a high level of contaminants and not enough active Free Chlorine to finish the job.

THE HIDDEN DANGERS OF THE "POOL SMELL"
Beyond just being an unpleasant odor, a high concentration of chloramines can cause real discomfort for you and your family. If you’ve ever come out of a pool with bright red, stinging eyes or itchy, dry skin, you probably blamed "too much chlorine."
In reality, it was likely the chloramines.
EYE AND SKIN IRRITATION
Chloramines are notorious irritants. They are much more aggressive on the soft tissues of the eyes and the surface of the skin than Free Chlorine itself. When the water is properly balanced by a professional team, you can swim for hours and open your eyes underwater without that familiar sting.
RESPIRATORY ISSUES
This is especially important for indoor pools or pools with high screen enclosures where air circulation might be limited. Chloramines are volatile, meaning they off-gas into the air right above the water's surface. Breathing in these "chemical" fumes can trigger asthma symptoms or cause a scratchy throat.
When we handle your pool cleaning, our goal isn't just to make the water look pretty: it’s to ensure the environment is healthy for everyone who jumps in.
HOW TO TELL IF YOUR WATER IS TRULY CLEAN
If you can't rely on your nose to tell you if a pool is clean, how do you know? It comes down to the chemistry. At Limping Elk Pools, we use professional-grade testing to look at three specific numbers:
- Free Chlorine (FC): The active sanitizer available to kill germs.
- Combined Chlorine (CC): The "used up" chlorine (chloramines) that causes the smell and irritation.
- Total Chlorine (TC): The sum of both.
A healthy pool should have a Combined Chlorine level of less than 0.2 ppm (parts per million). If that number starts creeping up toward 0.5 ppm or higher, you’re going to start smelling it, and your swimmers are going to start feeling it.

THE SOLUTION: HOW WE GET RID OF THE SMELL
You might think that if you have too many chloramines, you should stop adding chlorine. Paradoxically, the solution is usually to add more chlorine: but in a very specific way.
SUPERCHLORINATION (SHOCKING)
To break the chemical bond of chloramines and "reset" the pool, we perform what’s known as superchlorination, or "shocking" the pool. By raising the Free Chlorine levels to a high enough point (the "breakpoint"), we can effectively burn off the chloramines and let the nitrogen escape into the atmosphere. This leaves you with fresh, active Free Chlorine and zero odor.
PROPER FILTRATION AND CIRCULATION
Sometimes, the smell persists because the water isn't moving enough or the filter is bogged down with organic debris. We ensure your equipment is running efficiently so that contaminants are filtered out before they have a chance to bond with your chlorine. If you’re worried your equipment isn't up to the task, check out our repairs page to see how we can help.
WHY WEEKLY SERVICE IS THE ULTIMATE "DEODORIZER"
Maintaining a pool that doesn't smell like a chemical plant takes consistency. It’s easy for a DIY homeowner to miss a week, let the chlorine dip, and suddenly find themselves fighting a "smelly" pool that requires expensive shock treatments to fix.
By choosing weekly pool service, you’re getting a proactive defense against chloramines. Here is what that looks like with Limping Elk Pools:
- Experienced Technicians: We know the difference between a pool that needs a little pH adjustment and one that is heading toward a chloramine crisis.
- Reliable Scheduling: We show up when we say we will. Consistency is the secret ingredient to clear, odorless water.
- Honest Communication: We’ll let you know if your bather load (how many people are swimming) is getting too high for your current settings and suggest adjustments.
- Stress-Free Maintenance: You get to enjoy the "Psychology of Blue Water": that feeling of total peace when you look at a shimmering, clear pool: without the headache of chemical math.

WHAT YOU CAN DO AS A HOMEOWNER
While we handle the heavy lifting and the chemical balancing, there are a few simple things you can do to keep those chloramines at bay between our visits:
- The Pre-Swim Shower: It sounds like a chore, but a quick 30-second rinse removes the sweat, lotions, and perfumes that react with chlorine to create that smell.
- Keep Pets Out (Occasionally): We love dogs, but one Golden Retriever in a pool can introduce as many organic contaminants as 10 humans! If Fido is a frequent swimmer, let us know so we can adjust your service plan.
- Don't Pee in the Pool: It’s the oldest rule in the book for a reason. Nitrogen is the primary building block of chloramines, and urine is full of it.
THE LIMPING ELK PROMISE: NO STRESS, JUST SWIMMING
We’ve seen it all: from "swamp" pools to chemical-burned backyard pits. Our mission is to take the burden of pool ownership off your shoulders. Being veteran-owned, we bring a level of discipline and attention to detail that ensures your pool isn't just "clear," but truly healthy.
We don't believe in the "no-show" culture of the pool industry, and we certainly don't believe in the "upsell." Our goal is to provide fair and honest service that keeps your water perfect and your backyard smelling like fresh air and summer breezes: not bleach.
Ready for a pool that looks as good as it feels? No more red eyes, no more itchy skin, and definitely no more "chlorine smell."

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: If my pool doesn't smell, how do I know there is chlorine in it?
A: That’s the beauty of it! You can’t tell by smell. You have to use a high-quality test kit. A properly balanced pool with 3.0 ppm of Free Chlorine will be virtually odorless.
Q: Why does my skin feel dry after I swim if it's not the chlorine?
A: While chloramines are the main culprit for irritation, an unbalanced pH can also make the water feel "harsh" on your skin. We balance the pH to match the natural chemistry of your eyes and skin for maximum comfort.
Q: Is it safe to swim in a pool that smells like chemicals?
A: It’s generally "safe" in terms of bacteria, but it’s not ideal. It means the sanitizer is working overtime. If the smell is overwhelming, it’s a sign that the pool needs to be tested and likely shocked before the next big swim party.
Q: How often should a pool be shocked to prevent smells?
A: It depends on usage! For a standard family pool with regular use, a weekly preventative dose during our service visits is usually enough to keep chloramines from ever forming.
