You made the switch to saltwater for a reason: you wanted softer water, fewer red eyes, and a break from the constant "chemical dance" of a traditional chlorine pool. It feels like a dream, right? But here’s the truth we see every day at Limping Elk Pools: saltwater pools are not maintenance-free.
In fact, if you treat your salt pool exactly like a traditional one: or worse, if you just "set it and forget it": you’re likely setting yourself up for expensive equipment repairs and cloudy water.
We want you to spend your weekends splashing with the family, not scrubbing scale off your tiles. Here are the 7 most common mistakes we see homeowners making with saltwater pool maintenance and exactly how you can fix them to keep your water sparkling.
1. THE "SET IT AND FORGET IT" MYTH
The biggest mistake is believing the hype that saltwater pools don't need regular attention. While the salt cell generates chlorine for you, it doesn't manage the balance of the rest of the water.
The Problem: Homeowners often stop testing their water because it "looks fine." By the time the water turns green or cloudy, the chemical imbalance has already been stressing your equipment for weeks.
The Fix: You still need to test your water weekly! Even though you aren't dumping liquid chlorine in every day, you need to ensure your salt cell is keeping up with the demand. A quick weekly check on your salt levels and chlorine output will save you hours of "shocking" and scrubbing later.
2. LETTING YOUR SALT LEVELS DROP TOO LOW
Your salt cell is the heart of your pool system. It uses electrolysis to turn salt into chlorine. But if the "fuel" (the salt) is low, the heart can’t pump.
The Problem: If your salt levels dip below the manufacturer's recommended range (usually 2700–3400 ppm), your cell will stop producing chlorine. This often happens after heavy rains or when you've had to drain some water. When the salt is low, your pool becomes a breeding ground for algae: fast!
The Fix: Check your salt levels at least once a month. Don’t just rely on the digital reading on your equipment panel: those sensors can get dirty or fail. Use a manual salt test strip or a digital tester to verify. If you’re low, add salt in small increments. We always tell our customers: it’s much easier to add more salt than it is to drain water because you added too much!

3. IGNORING THE "PH CREEP"
Saltwater pools have a natural tendency to see their pH levels "creep" upward. This is a byproduct of the chlorine-making process.
The Problem: High pH (above 7.8) makes your chlorine much less effective. It’s like trying to clean your house with a broom that’s missing half its bristles. High pH also leads to cloudy water and, even worse, calcium scaling on your pool’s finish and inside your expensive equipment. The Fix: Keep your pH between 7.2 and 7.6. Since salt pools naturally push pH up, you’ll likely need to add a little muriatic acid or pH reducer more often than you would in a traditional pool. It’s a small task that prevents a massive headache.
4. NEGLECTING SALT CELL INSPECTION (AND SCALING)
Because the salt cell is tucked away in your plumbing, it’s easy to ignore. But inside that cell, a chemical reaction is happening that creates a lot of heat and high pH: the perfect recipe for calcium scale.
The Problem: Calcium builds up on the metal plates inside the cell, acting like a crusty barrier. This prevents the cell from making chlorine and eventually burns out the electronics. A scaled-up cell is one of the most common reasons for pool equipment repairs we see.
The Fix: Inspect your salt cell every three months. Look inside for white, flaky deposits. If you see buildup, it’s time for a cleaning. We recommend a light hose-off first, and if that doesn’t work, a mild acid wash.
Pro Tip: Don't over-clean with acid! Acid eats away at the precious metal coating on the plates. If you keep your pH in check, you won't have to clean the cell nearly as often.

5. FORGETTING THE STABILIZER (CYANURIC ACID)
Think of Cyanuric Acid (CYA) as sunscreen for your chlorine. Without it, the sun’s UV rays will "burn off" your chlorine in a matter of hours.
The Problem: Many salt pool owners keep their CYA too low. In a traditional pool, you might aim for 30-50 ppm. But in a salt pool, we recommend keeping it a bit higher: around 60-80 ppm. If it’s too low, your salt cell has to work twice as hard to keep up, which wears it out years before its time.
The Fix: Test your CYA monthly. If it’s low, add a stabilizer. This one simple step can double the life of your salt cell and keep your water safer for longer.
6. NEGLECTING TOTAL ALKALINITY
Total Alkalinity (TA) is the "anchor" for your pH. If your TA is out of whack, your pH will bounce around like a rubber ball, making it impossible to keep your water balanced.
The Problem: When alkalinity is too low, your pH can crash or spike suddenly. When it's too high, it becomes incredibly difficult to bring your high pH back down. In saltwater pools, we often find that keeping alkalinity on the slightly lower side (around 80 ppm) helps counteract that natural pH creep we mentioned earlier.
The Fix: Check your alkalinity every time you check your pH. If you find yourself constantly battling high pH, lowering your alkalinity just a bit can often be the "magic fix" that stabilizes your water.
7. OVER-RELYING ON THE "BOOST" BUTTON
Most salt systems have a "Boost" or "Super-Chlorinate" button. It tells the cell to run at 100% capacity for 24 hours.
The Problem: Homeowners often use this every time the pool looks a little dull or after a big pool party. While it works, it puts a massive amount of stress on the salt cell. Relying on this button too often is a fast track to a $1,000 replacement bill.
The Fix: If your pool needs a heavy hit of chlorine (like after a storm or a dozen kids have been swimming), just use a bag of liquid or granular shock instead. It’s cheaper to buy a bottle of shock than it is to replace your salt cell early!
