GETTING YOUR WEEKEND BACK : WHY CLEAN FILTERS MATTER

We know the feeling. You step out onto the patio, coffee in hand, ready to enjoy a peaceful morning by the water. But instead of a sparkling blue oasis, you’re greeted by water that looks just a little bit… off. Maybe it’s a bit cloudy, or perhaps there’s a fine layer of dust on the steps that wasn't there yesterday.

It’s frustrating. You pay for the chemicals, you run the pump, and yet the water isn't inviting. Most of the time, the culprit isn't a lack of chlorine: it’s a tired, dirty filter.

Your pool filter is the unsung hero of your backyard. It works tirelessly behind the scenes to catch everything from microscopic algae spores to the hair and sunscreen that naturally wash off during a swim. But even heroes need a break. When your filter gets clogged, your pump has to work twice as hard, your electricity bill climbs, and your water quality takes a dive.

At Limping Elk Pools, we believe pool ownership should be about relaxation, not a mounting list of chores. We’ve put together this guide to help you master pool filter cleaning so you can get back to what matters: making memories with your family.

WHAT WE DO: UNDERSTANDING YOUR FILTER TYPE

Before you grab the hose, you need to know what you’re working with. Not all filters are created equal, and treating a sand filter like a cartridge filter is a recipe for a very long, very wet afternoon.

There are three main types of filters we see in the wild:

  • Cartridge Filters: These are incredibly popular because they provide great filtration and are relatively easy to maintain. They use pleated fabric cartridges to trap gunk.
  • Sand Filters: The old reliable of the pool world. They use a special grade of sand to catch debris. They’re low maintenance but don’t catch the tiny stuff quite as well as the others.
  • DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters: These are the gold standard for water clarity. They use a powder made of crushed fossils to filter out particles you can’t even see with the naked eye.

SIGNS IT’S TIME TO CLEAN: WATCHING THE PRESSURE GAUGE

How do you know when your filter is crying out for help? You don't have to guess. Your filter tank has a little dial on it called a pressure gauge. This is your filter’s way of talking to you.

When your filter is clean and the water is flowing freely, the pressure will be at its "baseline" (usually between 10 and 15 psi for most setups). As the filter catches dirt, it becomes harder for water to push through, and that pressure starts to climb.

Reliable Rule of Thumb: When the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi higher than your clean baseline, it’s time to clean.

Experienced pool owners know that waiting too long can actually damage the filter elements or put unnecessary strain on your expensive pump motor. We always recommend checking that gauge once a week. It takes five seconds and saves you hundreds in potential repairs!

THE TOOLS YOU’LL NEED FOR SUCCESS

You don't need a degree in engineering to clean a pool filter, but having the right tools makes the job a whole lot faster. Here is what we suggest having on hand:

  • A high-quality garden hose: A standard hose is fine, but a spray attachment with a "jet" or "flat" setting is a game-changer.
  • Filter cleaning solution: Sometimes water isn't enough. Oils from skin and hair can "gum up" the pleats. We recommend a dedicated filter degreaser.
  • A soft-bristle brush: For gently scrubbing away stubborn debris without tearing the delicate fabric.
  • O-ring lubricant: Essential for keeping your seals watertight and easy to open next time.
  • A large bucket: For those times when a deep soak is the only way to get things truly clean.

CARTRIDGE FILTER CLEANING: THE STEP-BY-STEP HASSLE-FREE METHOD

If you have a cartridge filter, you're in luck: this is one of the most straightforward cleaning processes.

  1. Safety First: Turn off your pump. You never want to open a pressurized tank while the motor is running.
  2. Release the Pressure: Open the air relief valve on top of the tank. You’ll hear a hiss of air: that’s the sound of the system relaxing.
  3. Open the Tank: Remove the locking ring or bolts and lift off the lid.
  4. Remove the Cartridges: Carefully lift the cartridges out. Take a look at them. If they look grey, oily, or covered in "gunk," they definitely need some love.

  1. The Power Wash: Use your garden hose to spray the cartridge at a 45-degree angle. Work from top to bottom, making sure to get deep into the pleats.
  2. The Deep Soak: If the cartridge still feels "tacky" or looks dark after rinsing, it’s time for a soak. Place it in a bucket with water and filter cleaner overnight. This dissolves the oils that a hose just can't reach.
  3. The Inspection: Check for any tears in the fabric or cracks in the plastic ends. If you see "fuzzy" fabric or broken bands, it’s time for a replacement.
  4. Reinstall and Seal: Pop the clean cartridges back in. Clean the tank's O-ring, apply a fresh dab of lubricant, and seal it back up.

SAND AND DE FILTERS: THE ART OF THE BACKWASH

Sand and DE filters are cleaned through a process called "backwashing." This essentially means running the water backward through the filter to flush the dirt out through a waste line.

For a sand filter, it’s as easy as turning a valve. For a DE filter, it’s a bit more involved because you have to "recharge" the filter with new DE powder through the skimmer after you’re done.

Honest Advice: While backwashing is easy, it doesn't remove everything. Once or twice a year, these filters need a "tear-down" cleaning where the internal grids or the sand bed are chemically treated to remove deep-seated oils and scale.

WHAT WE DO: BEYOND THE BASICS

Cleaning your filter is great, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. To keep your water looking like a resort, you need to stay on top of the chemistry and the debris.

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

Even the best-intentioned homeowners can make mistakes that lead to cloudy water or broken parts. Here is what to avoid:

  • Using a pressure washer: It’s tempting to use that 3000 psi power washer to get the cartridges "extra white," but don't do it! High pressure can destroy the filtration fabric, essentially turning your filter into a sieve that catches nothing.
  • Forgetting the O-ring: A dry O-ring is the number one cause of air leaks and "bubbling" at the pool returns. Always use a silicone-based lubricant.
  • Skipping the soak: If you have high bather loads (lots of kids and sunscreen), a simple rinse isn't enough. That grease stays in the fibers and slows down your flow rate.
