Walking out to your backyard only to realize the water line is an inch lower than it was yesterday is enough to make any homeowner’s heart sink. You start doing the mental math: how much is the water bill going to be? Is there a massive crack in the foundation? Is my pump about to burn out because it’s sucking air?
We get it. Owning a pool should be about relaxing on a Saturday afternoon, not patrolling the perimeter with a flashlight looking for wet spots in the grass. At Limping Elk Pools, we believe pool ownership should be stress-free, and that starts with knowing exactly what’s going on with your water level.
While some water loss is perfectly normal, other types are a cry for help from your plumbing. Here are the 10 most common reasons your pool water is dropping and: more importantly: how we can help you fix it right now.
THE BUCKET TEST: YOUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE
Before you panic, you need to determine if you’re dealing with Mother Nature or a mechanical failure. We always recommend the "Bucket Test" to our clients. It’s a simple, honest way to see if you actually need a professional pool leak detection service.
- Fill a five-gallon bucket with pool water.
- Set the bucket on the first or second step of your pool (so the water in the bucket stays the same temperature as the pool).
- Mark the water level inside the bucket and the water level of the pool on the outside of the bucket.
- Wait 24 to 48 hours.
If both levels dropped the same amount, it’s just evaporation. If the pool level dropped significantly more than the bucket level, you have a leak. It’s that simple!

1. INTENSE SUN EXPOSURE
If your pool sits in direct sunlight all day without any screen or shade, you’re going to lose water. Think of your pool like a giant teapot on a low simmer. The sun’s UV rays hit the surface, heat the top layer of water, and turn it into vapor. In hot, dry climates, you can easily lose a quarter-inch of water a day just from the sun.
The Fix: If the sun is the culprit, a solar cover or a liquid pool cover can work wonders. By creating a barrier between the water and the air, you can reduce evaporation by up to 95%.
2. THE "TEMPERATURE SWING" EFFECT
This is the most common reason for water loss during the spring and fall. When the air temperature drops at night but your pool water stays warm, the water begins to "steam." You’ve probably seen it on a cool morning: that beautiful mist rising off the surface. That mist is literally your pool water leaving the basin.
The Fix: Using a thermal pool blanket at night traps that heat and prevents the "steam" effect. It keeps your water where it belongs and saves you money on heating costs, too!
3. LOW HUMIDITY LEVELS
Dry air is hungry for moisture. If you live in an area with low humidity, the air will pull water right out of your pool at an accelerated rate. This is why pools in the desert lose water much faster than pools in humid coastal areas.
The Fix: Again, covers are your best friend here. If a physical cover is too much of a hassle, our pool maintenance service can discuss automatic cover options or chemical evaporation inhibitors that are safe for your family and your equipment.
4. WIND EVAPORATION
Wind is an often-overlooked water thief. As wind blows across the surface of your pool, it carries away the humid air sitting right above the water and replaces it with dry air, which then absorbs more water. It’s a continuous cycle that can strip inches off your water level during a particularly gusty week.
The Fix: Consider landscaping or "windbreaks" like fences or privacy screens. Not only do they keep the water in, but they also keep debris out, making your weekly pool service even more effective.
5. WATER FEATURES AND FOUNTAINS
We all love the sound of a bubbling waterfall or a deck jet splashing into the pool. However, these features increase the surface area of the water exposed to the air. They also break the water into smaller droplets, which evaporate much faster than a still body of water.
The Fix: You don't have to get rid of your features! Just be mindful of when they are running. We suggest turning off fountains and waterfalls when you aren't outside to enjoy them. This saves water and reduces the wear and tear on your pump.

6. HEAVY POOL ACTIVITY (SPLASH-OUT)
If you have kids, grandkids, or a golden retriever who loves cannonballs, "splash-out" is a real thing. Active swimming, jumping, and exiting the pool can remove gallons of water in a single afternoon.
The Fix: While we want you to have fun, if the water loss is excessive, check your "auto-fill" valve. If it’s working overtime to keep up with the kids, you might see a spike in your utility bill.
7. EQUIPMENT PAD LEAKS
Now we’re getting into the "Uh-Oh" territory. If you notice a puddle around your pump or filter, you have a mechanical leak. Common culprits include:
- The Pump Seal: If water is dripping from the bottom of the pump motor.
- The Multi-port Valve: If the spider gasket is worn, water can leak out of the waste line even when you aren't backwashing.
- O-Rings: Dried-out O-rings on the filter housing or pump lid can spray a fine mist of water that adds up over time.
The Fix: This is where our repairs team shines. Most of these are quick, affordable fixes that prevent much larger, more expensive equipment failures down the road. Our technicians are experts at spotting these "silent" leaks during regular visits.
8. STRUCTURAL CRACKS IN THE SHELL
If you have a concrete or gunite pool, small structural cracks can develop over time due to ground shifting or age. Even a "hairline" crack can leak hundreds of gallons of water a week because the weight of the water creates pressure that forces it out through the gap.
The Fix: Look for cracks near the tile line or around the skimmer throat. If you see something suspicious, don't wait. We provide professional pool leak detection to pinpoint exactly where the water is escaping, often saving you from having to drain the entire pool.
9. UNDERGROUND PLUMBING LEAKS
This is the one that keeps homeowners up at night. A pipe can crack underground due to tree roots, soil settling, or even a poor original installation. If your water level drops more when the pump is running, the leak is likely on the pressure side (after the pump). If it drops more when the pump is off, it might be on the suction side or the pool shell itself.
The Fix: If you suspect an underground leak, you need professional help. We use specialized sonar and pressure-testing equipment to find the leak without digging up your entire backyard. Our goal is always to find the most non-invasive solution possible.

10. VINYL LINER TEARS
For those with vinyl liner pools, even a tiny hole caused by a rogue pool pole or a sharp toy can lead to significant water loss. You might notice the ground around the pool feeling "spongy" or see wrinkles forming in the liner where water has gotten underneath it.
The Fix: Many small liner tears can be patched underwater with a simple kit. However, if the liner is old and brittle, it might be time for a replacement. We can assess the condition of your liner and give you an honest, fair recommendation.
