But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to stay that way, and you don’t have to tackle the cleanup alone. WHY THE MONSOON IS YOUR POOL’S WORST ENEMY
The monsoon season brings a "triple threat" to your swimming pool: high winds, heavy rain, and massive amounts of organic debris.
First, the dust. It isn't just "dirt." It’s packed with phosphates, minerals, and microscopic spores. When that dust hits your water, it acts like a buffet for algae. Then comes the rain. While a little extra water might seem harmless, rainwater is usually acidic and carries its own set of pollutants. It dilutes your chlorine and throws your pH levels into a tailspin. PREPPING YOUR BACKYARD BEFORE THE DUST HITS
Preparation is the secret to a stress-free monsoon season. If the weather report is calling for a "chance of storms," taking twenty minutes to secure your yard can save you hundreds of dollars in repairs later.
- Secure the Projectiles: High winds can turn your patio chairs, pool toys, and even lightweight potted plants into flying hazards. If they end up in the pool, they can tear liners or chip the plaster. Move loose items into the garage or a shed.
- Prune the Trees: If you have palm trees or deciduous trees near the water, keep them trimmed. Dead fronds and loose branches are the first things to fly off during a microburst.
- The "Water Level" Question: We get asked all the time if people should drain their pools before a big rain. The answer is almost always no. Never drain your pool completely; the weight of the water keeps the pool shell in the ground. If you’re worried about overflow, you can lower the water level by about a foot: just enough to give the rain some "room" without exposing the tile or plaster to the sun.
THE GOLDEN RULE: TURN OFF THE PUMP!
This is the most important piece of advice we can give you. When the wind starts howling and the dust starts flying, turn off your pool pump.
Why? Because your pool’s filtration system is designed to catch small particles, not five pounds of mud and a dozen palm fronds all at once. If the pump is running during the height of the storm, the skimmer baskets can fill up in seconds. Once they’re clogged, the pump will struggle to pull water, which can lead to the motor overheating or burning out entirely.
Turning off the power at the breaker or via your automation app ensures that your equipment stays safe while the storm does its thing. Once the wind dies down, you can assess the situation before flipping the switch back on.

THE POST-STORM RECOVERY PLAN
Once the clouds part and the sun comes back out, it’s time to get to work. The faster you act, the easier the cleanup will be. If you wait three days to address the mess, you’re practically inviting an algae bloom to move in.
1. Surface Skimming and Debris Removal
Start by getting the "big stuff" out. Use a heavy-duty leaf net to scoop out branches, leaves, and trash. Don't try to vacuum up large piles of leaves: you'll just clog your pipes. Clear the surface and the floor as much as you can manually.
2. Check the Baskets
Before you turn the pump back on, empty the skimmer baskets and the pump strainer basket. You’d be surprised how much "gunk" can pack into those small spaces.
3. Test the Chemistry
This is where most people get tripped up. The rain and dust have likely tanked your chlorine levels. You’ll need to test the pH, Alkalinity, and Sanitizer levels immediately. 4. Filter Maintenance
Your filter is going to be doing a lot of heavy lifting for the next 24 to 48 hours. If you have a DE or Sand filter, you’ll likely need to backwash. If you have a cartridge filter, be prepared to pull the elements and hose them off. If the water stays cloudy even after running the pump, your filters might be "caked" with fine dust and need a deeper clean.
