Before the summer heat really kicks into high gear, we want to help you avoid the most common headaches. Here are the 7 biggest mistakes homeowners make with their pool filters: and how you can fix them today to keep your water clear and your week stress-free!
1. IGNORING THE PRESSURE GAUGE (OR NOT KNOWING YOUR "STARTING" NUMBER)
Your pressure gauge is the only way your filter can talk to you. If you aren't listening, you’re flying blind.
Most folks look at the gauge and see a needle, but they don't know what it actually means. The biggest mistake? Not knowing your "baseline" pressure. This is the PSI (pounds per square inch) your gauge reads right after a fresh cleaning.
How to fix it:
Next time your filter is clean, write that number down. We often suggest writing it right on the filter tank with a permanent marker! When that needle climbs 8–10 PSI above your baseline, it’s time for a cleaning. If the gauge is stuck at zero or never moves, it’s likely broken: a cheap $20 fix that saves you hundreds in potential pump damage.
2. RUNNING A DIRTY FILTER FOR TOO LONG
We get it: life gets busy. But pushing a dirty filter "just one more week" during July is a recipe for a green pool. When your filter is packed with gunk, your pump has to work twice as hard to push water through it. This doesn't just lead to cloudy water; it skyrockets your electric bill and wears out your expensive pool pump.
How to fix it:
Stick to a schedule! If you have a cartridge filter, it typically needs a deep clean every 4-6 months depending on your pool's environment. 3. BACKWASHING TOO MUCH (OR NOT ENOUGH)
If you have a Sand or D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) filter, backwashing is your best friend: but you can have too much of a good thing.
- The "Too Much" Mistake: Believe it or not, a sand filter actually works better when it’s slightly dirty. The small amount of debris helps catch even smaller particles. If you backwash every single week "just because," you’re actually making your filter less efficient.
- The "Not Enough" Mistake: If you ignore it, the pressure builds until it can actually crack the internal components of your filter.
How to fix it:
Only backwash when your pressure gauge tells you to (that 8-10 PSI rise we mentioned!). And for heaven's sake, always turn the pump OFF before you move that multiport valve handle, or you’ll tear the internal gasket.
4. FORGETTING THE ANNUAL "DEEP CLEAN"
For D.E. and Sand filters, backwashing isn't the end of the story. Over time, body oils, sunscreens, and minerals build up on the grids or in the sand. Backwashing won't get that "sticky" stuff off.
How to fix it:
- For D.E. Filters: You need a full "teardown" once a year. This involves taking the grids out, hosing them down, and soaking them in a filter cleaner to strip away oils.
- For Sand Filters: Think about replacing your sand every 3-5 years. If your water stays cloudy even after a long backwash, your sand might be "channeled" or just plain worn out.
5. NEVER INSPECTING YOUR O-RINGS
This is the "small thing" that causes "big problems." Every time you open your filter or pump lid, there’s a large rubber O-ring keeping the seal tight. If these get dry, cracked, or flattened, you’ll start sucking air into the system.
How to fix it:
Every time you open the system, wipe the O-ring clean and apply a silicone-based pool lubricant (never use Vaseline/petroleum jelly, as it eats the rubber!). If it looks flat or has tiny cracks, replace it immediately. A $10 O-ring can prevent a $500 repair bill for a pump that ran dry. 6. USING THE WRONG MEDIA (OR THE WRONG AMOUNT)
Adding D.E. powder to a filter seems simple, but if you add too much, you’ll clog the grids instantly. If you add too little, the dirt will embed itself directly into the fabric of the grids, ruining them.
How to fix it:
Check the label on your filter tank! It will tell you exactly how many pounds of D.E. or sand it requires. Use a dedicated D.E. scoop so you know exactly how much you're putting in. If you're unsure, reach out to us and we can help you find the right specs for your specific model.
7. MISMATCHED PUMP AND FILTER SIZE
This usually happens when a DIY-er or a "budget" builder installs equipment. If your pump is too powerful for your filter, it will literally "blast" the dirt right through the filter media and back into your pool. You’ll be filtering 24/7 and the water will still look dull.
How to fix it:
Your filter has a "Max Flow Rate" (measured in GPM – Gallons Per Minute). Your pump should never exceed that. If you suspect your equipment is mismatched, we can perform an equipment inspection to ensure everything is sized correctly for your pool’s volume.
