Limping elk pools

Owning a pool should feel like a permanent vacation in your own backyard. It’s where the kids splash around on Saturday afternoons and where you finally unwind with a drink after a long Tuesday. But for many homeowners, that "vacation" quickly starts feeling like a second job: one that involves a lot of confusing chemicals, heavy lifting, and the constant fear of the water turning green.

We see it all the time. You’re busy, you’re overwhelmed, and you just want the water to be clear when you’re ready to jump in. At Limping Elk Pools, we believe pool care shouldn’t be a source of stress. We’ve helped countless neighbors move from "pool-panic" to "pool-peace" by fixing a few simple: but very common: mistakes.

Looking to get your weekends back? We've got you covered! Here are the 7 most common mistakes we see and exactly how you can fix them.

1. IGNORING THE “INVISIBLE” CHEMISTRY

Most homeowners know they need chlorine. If the water looks a little cloudy, they toss in a bucket of shock and hope for the best. But pool chemistry is about much more than just chlorine levels.

The Problem: Ignoring your pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness is like trying to drive a car with no oil. You might move for a while, but eventually, things are going to break. If your pH is out of whack, your chlorine actually stops working effectively. You could have plenty of chlorine in the water, but if the pH is too high, it's basically "sleeping" while algae starts to grow.

The Fix: Test your water at least twice a week. You want your pH between 7.2 and 7.6 and your alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm. When these are balanced, your chlorine can do its job, keeping the water safe and sparkling.

2. THE “SPLASH AND DASH” FILTER NEGLECT

Your filter is the lungs of your pool. It breathes life into the water by catching all the tiny debris, oils, and skin cells that make the water look dull.

The Problem: Many homeowners wait until the water is visibly dirty or the pump is making a strange noise before checking the filter. By then, the pressure has built up so much that it’s straining your expensive equipment. A dirty filter doesn't just mean cloudy water: it means higher electricity bills and a shorter lifespan for your pump.

The Fix: Clean your filter on a regular schedule, not just when there’s a problem. For cartridge filters, we recommend a thorough cleaning every few weeks depending on usage. If you notice the pressure gauge is 8–10 psi higher than its "clean" starting point, it’s time for a deep clean. At Limping Elk Pools, we handle the dirty work of filter cleaning so you don't have to spend your Saturday morning covered in gunk!

3. SKIPPING THE WALLS (AND STEPS)

If you only vacuum the floor, you’re only doing half the job.

The Problem: Algae loves to hide in places where the water doesn't circulate well: like behind the ladder, in the corners, and on the steps. If you don't brush these surfaces, a "biofilm" starts to grow. This is a slimy layer that protects algae from the chlorine in the water. You might think your pool is clean because the floor is clear, but the walls are actually breeding tomorrow’s green pool disaster.

Manual brushing of pool steps to remove algae and biofilm before treatment.

The Fix: Brush your pool walls, steps, and corners at least once a week. It only takes about 10 minutes, but it makes a world of difference. Think of it like brushing your teeth: you wouldn't just use mouthwash and call it a day, right? You need that physical scrubbing to keep things healthy.

4. RUNNING THE PUMP ON A “DIET”

We get it: electricity isn't cheap. Many homeowners try to save a few bucks by only running their pool pump for 3 or 4 hours a day.

The Problem: If the water isn't moving, it's stagnating. Stagnant water is an open invitation for mosquitoes and algae. Most pools need the entire volume of water to "turn over" (pass through the filter) at least once a day. For most residential pools, that takes about 8 to 12 hours.

The Fix: Run your pump for at least 8 hours a day during the summer. If you’re worried about the cost, try running it during "off-peak" hours (usually at night) when electricity rates are lower. A properly circulated pool is much easier (and cheaper) to keep clear than a stagnant one that needs expensive "green-to-clean" treatments later.

5. SHOCKING UNDER THE BLAZING SUN

When the pool looks a little "off," the instinct is to dump in the shock immediately.

The Problem: If you add liquid or powder chlorine in the middle of a sunny afternoon, you're wasting money. The UV rays from the sun are incredibly effective at "eating" unstabilized chlorine. Within a few hours, half of the shock you just paid for could be gone before it ever has a chance to kill the bacteria in your water.

The Fix: Always shock your pool in the evening or at night. This gives the chemicals all night to work their magic without the sun interfering. You’ll use fewer chemicals and see much better results.

6. THE “SET AND FORGET” SALTWATER MYTH

"I have a saltwater pool, so I don't have to do anything, right?" We hear this one a lot!

The Problem: Saltwater pools are fantastic, but they aren't "no-maintenance." A salt cell actually creates chlorine from the salt in the water. If your salt cell gets covered in calcium scale, it stops producing chlorine. Suddenly, your "maintenance-free" pool is a green pond.

The Fix: You still need to test your water weekly! Salt cells also tend to raise the pH of your water over time, so you'll need to keep an eye on that. We recommend inspecting your salt cell for scale every 3 months. If you see white, crusty buildup, it needs a specialized cleaning to keep it running efficiently.

7. HIRING BASED ON PRICE ALONE

It’s tempting to go with the "pool guy" who offers the lowest monthly rate.

The Problem: In the pool industry, you often get what you pay for. The cheapest service usually means a "splash and dash": someone who spends five minutes throwing in some chemicals and leaving without checking your equipment or sending you a report. When your pump breaks or your pool turns green because they missed something, that "cheap" service suddenly becomes very expensive.

The Fix: Look for reliability and communication. At Limping Elk Pools, we pride ourselves on being different. As a veteran-owned business, we believe in clear communication and honest work. You’ll get a notification when we’re on the way, a detailed service report when we’re done, and even a photo of your clear pool so you can see the results for yourself. No unnecessary upsells: just honest, expert care.
