You’ve added the tabs. You’ve dumped in the shock. You’ve spent your Saturday morning lugging heavy buckets of chemicals from the garage to the backyard. And yet: the water is still cloudy, or worse, that hint of green is starting to creep across the steps.
It’s frustrating! You’re doing everything the "pool store" told you to do, but your chlorine just isn't doing its job.
At Limping Elk Pools, we see this all the time. Homeowners often feel like they’re throwing money into a watery pit. The truth is, chlorine is a bit of a diva: it needs the right environment to perform. If your chemistry is off, you could have a high chlorine reading on your test kit, but the water still won't stay clear.
Let's break down the 10 most common reasons your chlorine is "quitting" on you and exactly how we fix it to get you back to a stress-free week.
1. YOUR PH IS TOO HIGH
Think of pH as the "volume" for your chlorine. If your pH is high (above 7.8), it's like turning the volume down until you can barely hear the music. Even if you have plenty of chlorine in the water, it becomes sluggish and loses its "killing power." At a pH of 8.0, your chlorine is only about 20% effective.
THE FIX: Keep your pH between 7.2 and 7.6. We check this every single week because even a heavy rain or a few kids jumping in can send it spiking. You can read more about why pH controls your chlorine's strength here.
2. THE "CHLORINE LOCK" (HIGH CYANURIC ACID)
Cyanuric Acid (CYA) is like sunscreen for chlorine: it protects it from being burned up by the sun. But too much of a good thing is a disaster. If your CYA levels get too high (usually from using too many chlorine tablets over a long time), it "locks" the chlorine. It’s there, but it’s stuck and can't fight algae.
THE FIX: Unfortunately, the only way to lower CYA is to drain some of the water and refill it with fresh water. We monitor these levels monthly to make sure you never hit that "lock" stage.

3. PHOSPHATES ARE FEEDING THE BEAST
Phosphates are basically "algae Gatorade." They don't kill chlorine directly, but they provide so much food for algae that the algae can grow faster than the chlorine can kill it. If you have high phosphates, your chlorine is working overtime just to keep up, and eventually, it loses the race.
THE FIX: We use specialized phosphate removers when levels get too high. Keeping these in check is one of the "secrets" to why our pools stay sparkling while the neighbor's pool goes green.
4. HEAVY BATHER LOAD
Did you have a big Memorial Day BBQ? A dozen kids in the pool for four hours adds a massive amount of "organic load" (sweat, sunscreen, and… other things). This uses up your chlorine residual almost instantly. If you don't "rebound" the water quickly after a party, it will go cloudy by Monday morning.
THE FIX: We always recommend an extra dose of liquid chlorine after a heavy swim day. When we handle your weekly pool service, we adjust our dosages based on how much use your pool is getting.
5. NITRATES ARE STUBBORN
Nitrates are like phosphates' meaner older brother. They usually come from fertilizer runoff, bird droppings, or even certain types of mulch. Nitrates create a massive chlorine demand. Like CYA, they don't leave the water on their own.
THE FIX: If your pool is "eating" chlorine and everything else looks perfect, we test for nitrates. The solution is usually a partial drain and refill: but we’ll always give you an honest recommendation before suggesting a drain.
6. YOUR FILTER IS DIRTY
If your filter is packed with gunk, it's a breeding ground for bacteria. Your chlorine is being used up trying to clean the inside of your filter instead of the water in your pool. You’re fighting a losing battle.

THE FIX: Regular filter cleanings are non-negotiable. We offer professional filter cleaning services to make sure your equipment is helping your chemistry, not hurting it.
7. POOR WATER CIRCULATION
Chlorine needs to move to work. If your pump isn't running long enough, or if you have "dead spots" in the corners of your pool where the water doesn't move, algae will start there. Even with 10ppm of chlorine, a stagnant corner will go green.
THE FIX: We ensure your return jets are positioned correctly and your variable speed pump is running for the optimal amount of time to keep that water moving.
8. TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS (TDS) ARE TOO HIGH
Over time, as water evaporates and you add chemicals, the "old" minerals and salts stay behind. Eventually, the water becomes "tired" and "saturated." It gets harder for any chemicals to dissolve or work effectively in "old" water.
THE FIX: Most pools in our area need a fresh start every 3–5 years. If your TDS is through the roof, we’ll let you know. No unnecessary upsells: just clear, honest communication about what your pool needs.
9. SUNLIGHT DEGRADATION
If you aren't using a stabilizer (CYA) at all, the sun can destroy 90% of your chlorine in just two hours. This is common if you only use liquid chlorine without checking your stabilizer levels regularly.
THE FIX: We balance your stabilizer levels so your chlorine survives the hot California sun, saving you money on chemicals in the long run.
10. COMBINED CHLORINE (CHLORAMINES)
That "pool smell" people talk about? That’s not the smell of enough chlorine: it’s the smell of used up chlorine (chloramines). Chloramines are ineffective at killing algae and they irritate your eyes and skin.
THE FIX: To get rid of chloramines, you actually need to add more chlorine (a process called breakpoint chlorination) to "shock" the water and break those bonds.
